1.Why would we look at onionroot tips(as opposed to perhaps a leaf or stem) and fishblastula(as opposed to a fish fin or gill for example) to study the phases of mitosis?2.In what other sorts of tissues (think about a human) would you expect to find mitosis occurring?

To best answer this question, provide examples of a tissues and then answer “whythattissue in

particular”.

3.A) Cells in which cell cycle phase, or specific mitosis phase, were the most numerous in the microscope? B) Why do you think that is?

4.How many cells are in your body (approximately)?

5.How were those cells produced from a single cell called a zygote (a fertilized egg)?

6.How does the genetic information in one of your body cells compare to that found in other body cells?

7.What enzyme catalyzes the copying of DNA in your cells?

8.In which phase of the cell cycle is the above enzyme active?

9.What is the importance of the fact that DNA is replicated prior to cell division?

10.How is telophase in plant cells different from telophase in animal cells?

11.How are normal cells and cancer cells different from each other?

12.Over ninety percent of human cancers are carcinomas- cancers that originate from epithelial cells- the cells that line body surfaces (internally and externally); whereas fewer than 5% of human cancers are sarcomas- cancers that originate from connective tissue like cartilage and tendons and also from muscle. Propose why this might be.

1. We look at onion root tips to study the phases of mitosis because the root tips house meristematic cells. These cells are continuously dividing and growing by mitotic divisions. Also, they are easy to culture, and meristematic tissues are believed to be the pathogen-free parts of a plant. It makes their preparation for microscopic studies easier. Therefore, onion root tips are better alternatives than a leaf or stem. Similarly, the fish blastula undergoing rapid mitotic division is better than a fully formed structure like gill or fin.
2. In humans, mitosis occurs in all the somatic cells of the body, as opposed to the gametic cells that form by meiotic division. For example, mitosis occurs in the human skin epidermis, where old and damaged cells are regularly replaced with new cells.
3. A) The cells were most numerous in the interphase stage of the mitotic cell cycle.
B) It is because interphase is the...
