The aim of this assignment is to provide you with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of
the application of primary health care (PHC) concepts and health promotion practice with particular
reference to the health of Indigenous Australians.
This assignment supports unit learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6.
Assignment details
A video concerning an Australian Indigenous community’s health project will be used as a trigger
for you to respond to four written questions about the social determinants of health, the principles
of primary health care, health promotion and cultural competence.
Step 1: Watch the video
Watch the video, It takes a village (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcXGuq_k2K8)
(Rural Health Channel, 2014), commencing at 15 minutes to view the 'Healing Circle at
Gnibi', a primary healthcare program carried out in a community in Western Australia.

Step 2: Write answers to four quesons
Answer the following questions in relation to the primary health care program:
1. Identify and discuss two social determinants of health that helped to determine the
need for the project. Provide examples from the video and include at least one scholarly
reference for each social determinant.
2. Identify and explain how two primary health care principles guided the project in the
video. Provide examples from the video and include at least one scholarly reference for
each principle.
3. Identify and discuss one strategy from the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion that
relates to the project in the video. Provide at least one example from the video and
include at least one scholarly reference.
4. Define cultural competence and discuss why it is important in determining the success
of the project. Provide at least one example from the video where this concept is
demonstrated and at least one scholarly reference.
Note:
Make sure you include examples from the video where prompted, and draw on relevant
material from your eText. Include at least one relevant reference for each response.
Responses must be in full, complete sentences. Your responses must not be in point
form.
You do not need to rewrite the question, but make sure you clearly identify which
response is associated with which question.
As this is not an essay, you don't need to have an introduction or conclusion.
You must have a reference list that includes the video and any other sources you have
cited using APA 7th referencing style. Whenever you are using in-text references, you
must include a separate page at the end of your assignment with a least of references
that you have used in-text. You must use APA. You will have a minimum of 7 references in
your list.
The reference list is not included in the word count.
