The Centre for U
an Transitions at Swinburne was established in 2017 to produce high quality and high
impact research focused on planning and governance to achieve needed u
an transitions, both in
Australia and internationally. The Centre has a distinct role within the
oader research field of u
an
transitions and devotes its efforts to address three challenges cities are facing today:
• Just cities transitions: how do we ensure accessibility, distribution and openness, for all, in the era of
transformation?
• Healthy cities transitions: how can u
an planning and governance contribute to better health and
well-being for all?
• Productive cities transitions: how do cities and people thrive in a future of space premiums, resource
estraint, automation, artificial intelligence, 3D fa
ication and radical deca
onisation?
We invite applications from suitably qualified candidates to undertake a PhD by publication with research
on u
an transitions and health. Global trends such as u
anisation, population ageing, mobility
transformation, and innovation in information technology have implications on human health. An
important link between u
an environments and health is people’s physical activity and sedentary
ehaviour. It is well known that physically inactive lifestyles are a major risk factor for obesity and chronic

diseases. Yet, our lifestyles are cu
ently highly inactive, and these trends and subsequent environmental
and social changes may make them even more sedentary. The aim of the scholarships is to produce
further evidence on how u
an environments impact human health through active living and to assist
decision makers to develop policies and strategies that can enhance people’s health. Specific domains
that can be investigated under the scholarship include u
an design/planning, active travel, u
an green
space and workplace.
Successful candidates will develop their project in consultation with supervisors. They will join a cohort
of PhD students already at the Centre and are expected to contribute to the Centre’s publication and
esearch culture.
The scholarship covers tuition fees for up to 4 years and provides and annual (indexed) stipend of
$27, XXXXXXXXXXrate) for three years.
Position Purpose
This is a scholarship for research training through a 3-year Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Successful
candidates will undertake supervised research with the aim of making a significant, independent and
original contribution to a discipline or profession that leads to the award of Doctor of Philosophy.
Successful candidates are expected to contribute to the Centre for U
an Transition’s research
environment and agenda.

Key Responsibility Areas
Research • The candidate will be required to undertake research to fulfil the
obligations of a Doctor of Philosophy
Project Activity • Collaborate effectively with others to achieve the project outcomes
• Develop and support research plans, communicate and execute
actions in a focused and efficient manner.
• Deliver research outputs, including research publications.
• Work autonomously, prioritise and coordinate the research tasks as
directed.
