Case Study: Scenario

You are employed as support worker in an aged care facility. As part of the diversional therapy activities a number of residents attend art and craft classes. You are supporting some of the residents attending these classes.

At your table, there is some lively discussion while the residents complete the craft activities. You have two

(2) Australian female residents (Sarah & Josie) that are loud and outspoken. Josie is visually impaired, and uses a cane when walking. Sarah and Josie frequently make very negative generalisations about other residents from other cultures.

Another participant is an Islamic Indonesian lady (Eliza), who is very reserved. Eliza also struggles with making herself understood at times as English is her second language. These comments that are continually demeaning about other people are making her feel uncomfortable. She is thinking of withdrawing from the activity all together.

    Majority of elected leaders in Australian parliament belong to Anglo celtic background, with less than 4% from Asian heritage. There are migrants and refugees from all round the world. Each of these groups contribute to the economic achievement and prosperity of the country.
    
Social:
    Diverse workforce from different backgrounds and experiences, work in all the sectors. It helps address the needs of different types of customers like women, gay, people from different religious and ethnic origins.
    Economic:
    Diverse workforce improves innovation, creativity and productivity by
inging together the people from different unique cultures and backgrounds and who retain their individual identities.
    Cultural:
    28% Australian are born overseas, 20% have their parents born overseas and and 20% speak non English language at home (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2019). Cultural diversity helps boost innovation, captured talent, and encourage productivity. It also lowers down the racial discrimination at workplace.

Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986 protects the people against workplace discrimination (Australian Government, 2019). Victorian Equal Opportunity Act 2010 safeguards the people from harassment at workplaces. Also there are many other Australian Discriminations laws to address the individual discriminations like disability, race, and race.
