Most people think that the organization they are working for is doing and running everything to the best of its ability. I know this because I have been in healthcare for six year. We see all the time different policies, new rules or how we preform different tasks. Healthcare is constantly changing, but we adjust and strive for positive change. One thing going into Strategic planning is you really have to look at what's being done and it will benefit to change it. Its important to ask what the plan is and where do you see it going. Put it on paper and think about what you want for the organization. How could that plan make it better, who will it effect and how it will benefit the employees and the patients, then how can you make it happen. Then little by little start working on that plan.

My father always said, "You can only take one bite of a elephant at a time. Eventually if you keep working at it the elephant will be gone." As a child I never could understand exactly what that ment. But it seriously makes so much sense even with strategic planning. After you get your plan laid out your start with the first thing on the list. Once you see success in the first thing on the list after a few months, then you move onto the next thing on the list. Eventually the elephant will be gone and you will have successfully completed the strategic plan for the organization. The plan is the elephant because it seems like so much, but the end is a massive achievement.

  • (2) Assume that you work for a hospital that has just implemented its 5-year strategic plan and the plan has been in effect for 1 year.
  • From your viewpoint, what is the most appropriate way to evaluate this plan, and what time frame would you use for evaluation? Why?

A strategic plan should include mile markers or time frames for which a goal should be met. To keep employees on task a scoreboard should be used and available to staff so they can make sure they are on task for the new plan. I think a quarterly review of the project progress should be performed to ensure the 5 year plan can be achieved. To make sure the hospital staff is staying up to date on any changes to the plan a memo should be made to the staff. Communication is one of the keys to making sure the plan can be met by dead line. Small task that are completed for the plan should be reviewed after completion to make sure goals were met.
