The Earth's Radius
The Earth's Radius
Pre-Lab
Name:______________________________ Date: ___________________ Section: __________
1. For this experiment to work we need to use two different locations to get the latitude, what
are these locations?
Answer
For measuring the earth radius we need to measure its diameter first as the center of the earth is
unapproachable. Here we need to be at two opposite poles of the earth to measure the radius of the
earth.
2. Describe the method used to measure the Sun's shadow.
Answer
Sun’s shadow can be measured with the help of angle of declination of the sun at a place. The tangent
of the angle of declination gives us an idea about the ratio of objects height and sun’s shadow, which
can be calculated easily.
3. In the drawing on page 18 what are the letters b and d used for? (Skip This one)
No drawing available
4. How can we get a more accurate measurement of the radius of the Earth using the method
in the lab?
Answer
The method used in lab is better to calculate radius of the earth as it is difficult to calculate accurate
adius on earth by considering the poles of the...
