Even though there was less support for the war due to the atrocities of famine and front-line fatalities, the "spirit of 1914" persisted in young German soldiers. In spite of his lack of experience, Paul approached the struggle with a loving heart and an open mind. It was the teacher, Kantorek, whose patriotic remarks inspired the entire class to join the Imperial German Army as soon as the war broke out.
