Executive Summary
Immigration can be considered the defining feature of Australia’s economic and social life and thus is point that should be thought upon seriously. Migration of healthcare professionals from Australia poses a great challenge for the country to deal with the people in need of healthcare. WHO’s initiatives always help with the shortage, but the country needs to modify its own policies so that migration reduces, and immigration of healthcare professionals increases. The data shows that this has been in the positive side since past few years and healthcare professionals have immigrated into Australia and working there but the requirement still exists. Australia is a developing nation with a number of opportunities that need to be explored and Australian system is being considered reliant on foreign-born health workers’ migration. The co
ect policies can always attract more people to the country and eventually help the country fulfill its shortage of healthcare professionals.

1.0 Reliance of Australia on International Migration for Healthcare Workforce
WHO adopted the Global Code of Practice on the International Recruitment of Health Personnel in the year 2010. This initiative was started to as a step that would address the shortage of health-care workers around the world (Canetti et al., 2016). Many countries have since then adopted the code and made significant changes in their national policies to allow international health care workers to work in their country.
This action had many positive impacts, but we still need to work on the migration of health care workers. The countries need a strong and well-qualified health workforce to achieve Universal Health Coverage (Sanggaran, Haire, and Zion, 2016). Universal Health Coverage can be defined as the provision of uniform healthcare facilities all around the globe.
According to the WHO, there is a shortage of about 2 million doctors, nurses and midwives globally to meet the minimum density which is recommended. This shortage for healthcare workers has a negative impact on the outcome of health which causes global pressure (Canetti et al., 2016). The local shortages worsened when the healthcare workers from low and middle income countries migrated to the high income countries.
In this situation of migration, countries like Australia are facing persistent shortage particularly in the rural and outer-metropolitan areas. This situation has worsened over the years due to factors like the decrease in working hours of the healthcare workers, the increased demand due to increase in aged population and the ageing healthcare workers (Sanggaran, Haire, and Zion, 2016).
The data obtained from various sources states that Australian health system is considerably reliant to the foreign-born health workers. Australia and other countries have found this solution to the shortage of healthcare professionals that they have become reliant to foreign workers and also recruit international medical graduates.
