Assignment 1 Marking Rubric: Weighting 30%

Student Name:

The task: In a recent article in Marie Claire, Roxane Gray wrote: “Black people do not need allies. We need people to stand up and take on the problems borne of oppression as their own, without remove or distance. We need people to do this even if they cannot fully understand what it’s like to be oppressed for their race or ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, class, religion, or other marker of identity. We need people to use common sense to figure out how to participate in social justice”.

Using the ideas found in these words by Roxane Gray, reflect upon the impact of invasion and colonisation upon First Nations Australians (people who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander). In your paper you should contemplate how social workers can work towards addressing the impact of colonisation upon First Nations Australians. In responding to this question, it is important to consider; a) how you as an individual may have participated in, or benefited from, the oppression of First Nations Australians (including unintentionally); b) the ways in which social workers (and the social work profession) have been complicit in the oppression created by colonisation and c) how you might participate in social justice and decolonising practices in your daily lives.

Essay Title- Social Workers and First Nation Australians
Social Workers and First Nation Australians
When the English first set foot on the Australian land they ended up taking the home of thousands of natives who inhabited the land. The first British fleet a
ived on January 1788 and the first colony on the Australian mainland was established. The British established colonies in Australia on the basis of unilateral possession. Initially, they assumed that Australia had few natives but this proved to be wrong when they ventured further into the inland te
itories. However, the British did not amend their colonisation terms and continued to occupy Australian te
itories under unfair and disproportionate terms, employing techniques of oppression, subjugation, torture and massacre.
There are varying accounts regarding the actual number of Indigenous people who originally lived in Australia at the time of colonization. Estimates recount numbers ranging from 300,000 to 1 million. The British who came and settled in Australia exploited the country’s riches and actively displaced the First Nations Australians. Many Indigenous people died as a result of new diseases introduced by the English like smallpox, influenza and measles. There are also reports of random killings, punitive expeditions and organised massacres. This gradually reduced the number of Indigenous population. Today the indigenous population in the country is very marginal (Macintyre et al., 2000).
The statistics regarding the Aboriginal and To
