Assessment task 2: REM framework in action
Intent: This assessment task asks students to focus on 2 key areas. Firstly, we want to see evidence of the REM framework in action. Through reflecting on the key components within the framework, students are able to speak about cultural safety, respect and their ability to work together with Indigenous Australians to enable optimal health care. Secondly, we want to see evidence of a commitment to lifelong learning, appreciating the complexity of our shared Australian history and the legacies we are all left with.
Objectives: This assessment task contributes to the development of graduate attributes: A&D; This assessment task contributes to the development of graduate attributes: 1.0 and 6.0 as follows:
(A. Critically reflect upon different models of care for people with chronic and complex healthcare needs across
varied acute and primary healthcare settings (RN Standards for Practice 1, 3, 4 & 5).
D. Critically reflect upon the impacts of colonisation on the health and wellbeing of Indigenous Australian and on
how nurses can make a meaningful difference to improving cu
ent health disparities (RN Standards for Practice
1, 2, 3, 6 & 7).
(This subject also contributes specifically to the following graduate attributes:
-Embody a professional disposition committed to excellence, equity and sustainability (1.0);
-Demonstrate professional cultural competency which contributes to the health and wellbeing of Indigenous
Australians, inclusive of physical, social, emotional and spiritual wellness (6.0)).
Task: Students are to produce a 500word statement of what they would do as a registered nurse to ensure Indigenous cultural respect within the clinical environment. Reflecting on the REM framework (provided), students will address each aspect detailed at the 3rd year criteria level. Student will submit this within their ePortfolio. The authenticity of this task links to the fact nurses will be asked to provide reasoning for actions or planned actions in relation to care provision and/or team work.
Furthermore, students will submit a written professional development plan (template provided) that outlines their intentions for ongoing engagement and learning about Indigenous cultural respect. The authenticity of this task links to the fact nurses are asked to have an ongoing PDP for auditing by AHPRA. (20% of the marks)
