Application of General Humanitarian Principles in the case studies
The assistance provided by the Bangladesh to the massive number of refugees is based on the general principles of humanity, impartiality and neutrality. They are provided medical aids and treatment tough not completely adequate. Camps have been established for their shelters which have basic amenities however they are overcrowded and facilities are not adequate to meet the needs of all the population. UN Agencies like International Organization for Management (IOM) has been working with humanitarian partners and the government to ensure the access to the displacement site for site planning and management.IOM has been trucking 740,000 litres of water into the camps. It dispatched health teams and distributed personal hygiene kits. They constructed 660 emergency pit latrines and 100 mobile toilets. They dug tube wells to provide clean drinking water and set up patient stabilization unit and child delivery facilities at largest scale. They also constructed safe spaces for women and girls to talk and share to facilitate psychological support. They also relocated some 1700 refugees to another government allocated site to decongest the existing establishments. The volunteers have been supporting the people in relocation. They also provided them household items and shelter kits having poles, bamboo poles and plastic sheets.
UN agencies like UNICEF and WHO immunized more than 150,000 children to help them fight against the out
eak of measles through vaccination campaign. They supplied syringes, vaccines and vitamin A capsules. These UN agencies also helped the government implement maternal, adolescents and new born healthcare services. They renovated the facilities for delivery and care for new born. They also helped the government maintain sanitation, hygiene, early warning system, health related information system and surveillance for diseases.
The care and support extended by United Nations for assistance of these people is a part of humanitarian principles. The services are provided to alleviate and prevent the human sufferings, and to protect and respect the dignity of every individual’s life. The preventive and safeguarding measures are not based on discrimination and are impartial extending support to all the non combatants. The rehabilitation measures are not discriminating on the basis of political opinion, gender, ethnicity and religion. It is completely based on the needs of those in emergency situation. The UN driven assistance has helped the Bangladesh in meeting the otherwise insufficient national resources.
Application of Specific Humanitarian health program management Principles
The specific Humanitarian Health Program Management Principles are based on transparency, accountability, population based approach, and addressing their short term and long term goals. The programmes run by WHO are managed and planned and carefully prioritized to implement the emergency health strategy. Their approach consistently changes according to availability of new information and with changes in condition. For instance seeing the overcrowded populations in the established camp settlements, The agencies planned to transit thousands of refugees from Kutupalong to the government establishment in south eastern Bangladesh. Understanding the potential spread of deadly diseases among the malnourished children the UN health agencies established the Vaccination campaigns to save millions of children against the out
eak of measles. Therefore the strategies and the assistance provided has been consistently improving and the aimed to meet the needs of the people. Considering the shortage of latrines and sanitation, their quality and shallowness reflected towards a potential danger of spread of infection in the camps so the UNICEF and WHO planned to construct latrines and sanitation facilities at large scale in the camps. They also cared to build safe spaces for the girls and women to spend time together and talk instead of just being in the congested camps whole day. The preventive and humanitarian assistance provided by these agencies has been implemented in wake of long term and short term needs of the refugees. All the programs have a long term perspective such as avoiding the danger of potentially deadly and...
