Introduction
Human development can be defined in various ways considering different perspectives such as from a medical perspective, human development includes the process and the stages involved during the growth of an individual from birth to death. From a social perspective, human development is the growth of humanity in terms of economy, freedom, equality and many more (UNDP, 2019). However, when it comes to lifespan development, a
oader vision is needed. Lifespan development is a theory that revolves around the process of human development. In simpler words, human development becomes a part of lifespan development. The concept or theory of lifespan development is not a new entity in this century because this concept was already defined way before we know but it was not prevalent at that time. It established its roots around eighteen and nineteen century. Life span development is a concept that not only includes the stages of human development but also the psychosocial behaviour of an individual (Rudolph, 2016).
Adjusting to Challenges and Changes an Individual faces during Lifespan Development
With a
oad vision, lifespan of an individual can be divides into 6 stages that are infancy, Childhood, Adolescence, Early Adulthood, Middle Age, and Older Age. Considering the early stages of an individual such as infancy, there are no such changes and challenges that an individual can face and even if they faces any, they will not be able to analyse or remember it since, the body and the mind are not developed to understand those changes. There are some common challenges and changes, which an individual has to face during every stage of development and these are—
Physical and hormonal changes - Considering ‘Adolescence’ as the first stage, where the changes began and individuals are exposed to the challenges that the society and su
oundings has to offer, Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs) comes out to be a biggest issue. A transition comes within children when puberty hits them. The hormonal rise is so uphill that they are not in their exact state of mind and everything feels like an adventure. This is the stage or age where an individual develops the curiosity towards everything their elders may have stopped from. As viewed by Dickson et al. (2015), alcohol is one of the most important substances, from which teens are meant to keep away but during this stage under the influence of curiosity and hormonal rush, they get attracted towards alcohol.
AUDs cluster in families and have a genetic origin. When a child observes the use of alcohol by their parents and relatives, a perception develops that is alcohol is the solution to every problem and a mode to cele
ate everything. In their study, they found that family is the major cause behind the alcohol abuse that develops within the child due to the continuous exposure of child towards alcohol during adolescence.
An emotional and behavioural change - With puberty only, come the uncontrolled outburst of emotions and leads to behavioural changes. Vaidya et al. (2019), in their study, explained that teens who observed their elders using alcohol as a way to supress their emotions, developed that habit of using alcohol to supress emotions for every small issue and this led them to AUD.
Health, psychological and social problems - Social problems like Eve teasing, racism, and body shaming are some issues that have been prevailing in our society from a very long time period that effects the psychological behaviour of an individual. Due to these issues, there can be development of psychological perspectives like inferiority complex and lack of confidence among victims. As suggested by Spector and Kitsuse (2017), to supress this emotional outburst it has been found that individual shifts toward alcohol. They get so addicted towards the numbness and hallucinations that they do not want to come out of it.
