Introduction
There have been multiple instances of the state of Texas seceding from the United States during the Revolutionary war, and it was decided in Texas vs White, in the United States Supreme Court that states such as Texas could not secede unilaterally. There are also modern attempts at secession after the 1990s as well. The Republic of Texas organization, which was founded by Richard Lance McLaren, and the Texas Nationalist Movement that was headed by Daniel Miller (Buenger).
Sam Houston has been involved in the secession of Texas as well. He was in favour of annexation of Texas, even though it would have resulted in war with Mexico, and the balance between Slave States and Free States.
The following essay aims to look at the secession of Texas, as well as Houston’s role in the secession. It looks at some of the various meetings that took place, and provides some insight into the secession movement.
The Secession Movement
The Republic of Texas seceded from Mexico in 1836, which was started by the people of Santa Anna. It was after the Republic of Texas seceded from Mexico that Sam Houston made his speech about being a part of the United States of America, because he felt that it would be harder for Texas to survive as an independent country (Richardson). This was primarily because he felt that the lack of hard cu
ency, and the threats from Mexico, would make it impossible for the place to survive at all.
Because of Texas’s history being independent, there was a significant change in the way that they were able to secede from the United States of Texas as well. The opposition was also from Lincoln and the views that he held, as well as the dissatisfaction to the way that the United States of America after annexation treated the inclusion of Texas into the country.
