Task Descrip,on
Your task is to produce a 1200-word academic essay which criJcally discusses the following
statement:
“Events are an effec-ve and appropriate means to facilitate social, cultural, environmental, and
economic development for a host community”.
You may argue in favour of, or against the senJment of the above statement. Conversely, it is
acceptable to offer a mixture of arguments for and against different elements of the statement.
Overall, the essay must demonstrate an understanding of the relaJonship between the events
industry and the ways in which events can impact upon their host communiJes. There should be a
meaningful discussion about the key factors rather than mere descripJons of elements.
Structure
The essay should contain the following elements:
1. A clear introducJon to the topic and the structure of the essay.
2. Provide an overview and definiJon of events and their purpose which:
◦ demonstrates an understanding of the history of events
◦ idenJfies and discusses the various sectors of the event industry
◦ idenJfies the various types of events (e.g., mega, hallmark, community, business)
◦ discusses the significance of the event industry in contemporary society.
3. Describes and discusses, uJlising examples, how events and event tourism interact with:
• economic development within host communiJes (e.g., jobs, income, sustainability)
• social and/or cultural development within host communiJes (e.g., social cohesion
and inclusion)
• environmental development within host communiJes (e.g., infrastructure,
evitalisaJon and appreciaJon of a\racJons, sustainability).
4. A
ief conclusion that draws together the main points made in your essay.
Referencing Requirements
• evidence that you have read the unit study materials including the textbook and other
prescribed readings; this is achieved by discussing those materials and referencing them
throughout the essay
• engagement with other relevant literature including academic journals and textbooks,
Internet sources, trade and other published reports and documentaJon to research and
develop your discussion
• at least 4 academic references cited
• a reference list for any literature cited.
• All works cited must be included in your reference list. CitaJons must conform to the
eferencing style adopted by the School of Business and Tourism, a link to which will be
available on the unit's MySCU site.
