Introduction
In this paper, the two theories of leadership have been elaborately discussed. The two theories of the leadership deal with the personality development of the team members or the workers. These include the Path Goal Theory of Leadership and the Holistic Theory of Leadership. It is the behavioural pattern of the team members or the workers that affect the productivity of any organisation. Hence, it is important to look after the fact of changing the patterns of the outlook of the team members so that it can give maximum output to the organisation.
The main objective of an organisation is to make profits and the main sources of production is its labour for the organisation so if the behavioural pattern can be affected to get the maximised output for the organisation it is beneficial for the organisation to run smoothly band in profits (Bindlish, Dutt & Pardasani, 2012). The organisation for short-lived profits may opt for the path goal theory where the stable and long-lived companies will choose the way of holistic method of leadership. The leadership largely, means the ability of an individual or a group of people that work hard, set rules and follow a strict guideline to achieve a set target goals and optimise the productive capacity of the organisation or of an individual.
Path-Goal Theory
There are several kinds of theories in the leadership. Leadership is generally a way of conducting or organizing certain set of rules that help any organization or the business firms to achieve goals or targets. Under the good qualities of leadership, one organisation or firms can reach heights of success and can achieve any hard obstacles that come to their path (Badshah, 2012). Leadership is nothing but an effective way to organise the various stuff and try to motivate the workers to
ing out the best out of them by optimising their productive capacity.
There are many theories leading to the management of leadership. One of such theories is path goal leadership theory. The basic objective of any leadership is to attain goals or set targets. According to the path goal theory, the leaders are determined to behave in a certain said manner that effectively lays impacts on attaining the goals of the organisation. Path-Goal is based on Vroom's (1964) expectancy theory.
According to this particular theory, the individual is expected to perform and behave in a certain way to affect the results of the outcomes of his behaviour and that outcome has to be in favour of the organisation. In other words, the path goal theory is nothing but a behavioural pattern in the leaders of the organisation that would help the organisation to attain goals and fulfil the set targets of the organisation (Best, 2011). The path goal leadership theory largely focusses on the leadership styles that take care the employees’ characteristics and the task environmental characteristics to determine effective profitable output.
Holistic Leadership Theory
Without a proper guidance of leadership, no goals can be achieved within a given time period systematically. There are many theories on the leadership qualities. One such theory is holistic leadership theory. According to the ancient ideas of the leadership, it was supposed that the leadership qualities are always by birth and not everybody can be a leader. The leadership, largely, means the ability of an individual or a group of people that work hard, set rules and follow a strict guideline to achieve a set target goals and optimise the productive capacity of the organisation or of an individual (Li, Tan & Teo, 2012).
The emergence of a leader is very much necessary because of the achievement of the targets to reach the limits of success. It is believed that the leaders are born and they are great people who do not mix with the common person. The leaders were treated as Gods. This has been proven wrong by the concept of the holistic theory. According to this theory, the leaders are nothing but common people like us. The leaders are born. They are given the responsibility of
inging out the best of the team members.
According to this theory, the relationship between the leaders is not of the leaders and followers but of the team members. This theory gives less weightage to the leaders as an individual but focuses more on the teamwork and the optimization of productivity through effective teamwork. In the theory of the holistic leadership the leaders, also, do not only focus on the product optimisation power of an individual but also, largely, focuses on the overall improvement of the personality of an individual (Hernandez, Eberly, Avolio & Johnson, 2011). No individual is treated as minor or incapable of doing anything. The overall development of the personality of individual is focused on the holistic theory of leadership.
